Sardina
TMC 800S Tropical Saltwater fly hook
Hook:
White GSP or clear mono
Thread:
Black over pearl Krystal Flash
Topping:
Dyed tan or olive over natural yak hair or equivelent synthetic hair. Optional black Krystal Flash lateral line.
Body:
Several strands of pearl Flashabou
Cheeks:
Medium to large dome eye with pupil cemented with 5-minute epoxy or UV glue
Head:
Notes: Sardinas are argueably the most important food source for pelagic species in Baja and the Sea of Cortez. Everybody eats them. The profile of this fly is slim and wide. Natural “saltwater” yak (white) is preferred and readily accepts dyes such as Veniards Fly Dye. Yak is available online ( Ebay, Aliexpress) as dusters or hair extensions. Synthetics such as SeaHair are an acceptable substitute but I find them coarse, do not compress well when tying and have limited movement in the water. I tie the flies full and trim them on the water depending on the size of the natural sardinas at the time.
I credit (blame) CSF members Don Starkin and Steve Cushing with spooling me up for fishing Baja. The index case was a 2004 unoffical club trip to Punta Colorado in Baja Sur on the Sea of Cortex where we caught them all: tuna, rooster fish and of course the iconic dorado. All on sardina patterns. My pattern was refined over time to the current design here.
For a time a group of CSF members journied each year to Loreto and Zihuatanejo to chase sailfish and dorado. The zenith was a 2011 club outing to Loreto that I lead where 11 CSF members, most new to southern salt blew up a dozen 10 to 12 weight rods on big dorado. The Orvis pose does not work in Baja.

Cam Siglar Popper
TMC 800S Tropical Saltwater fly hook or similar
Hook:
White GSP or clear mono
Thread
Six large saltwater hackles; three white, three hot pink/ cherise tied on 1/8 inch high pressure gas tubing. Six strands saltwater pearl Flashabou. Tubing cut to lenght to extend into head.
Body:
Hot pink/ cherise marabou over white.
Hackel:
Two part head. Front, Large Cam Siglar popper. Back, expoxy over clear mono with large googly doll eyes.
Head:
Notes: The Cam Sigler popper (AKA ‘Half a Chicken’) is a tube fly known for its distinctive "T" shaped head. The fly was designed by Cam Sigler, a pioneer in the fly fishing industry. The popper head can be reversed, effectively turning any streamer into a popper or slider. It is effective on sailfish, marlin and big dorado.
Naturally, after catching several sailfish in Baja Sur the hook was set for a group of CFS members to design a trip targeted soley on sailfish - in Guatemala! The tactics were to go offshore, and tease up sailfish into the spread to within casting distance, pull the teaser and cast the fly to the enraged fish, then pop, pop, boom! Over three days we teased up over 100 fish and brought 20+ to hand. Nothing more fun than a 80-120 lb saifish on a 12wt!
